One week until the Queen Sindel arrives!

So this was the match that stood in my way of grandmaster. There's a problem though. It's also his. Couldn't have planned it more perfect.

I think I may have figured out how Sindel's retcon fits within the established storyline and actually makes sense ... kind of

    Posted: 19 Nov 2019 07:07 AM PST

Okay right out of the bat, I don't like this Sindel retcon.

With that said, however, I've been thinking a lot recently about it and I think I am starting to see how it would actually make some sense. Now, remember, this is just a theory and it's absolutely not 100% correct. There are flaws in it but I think it actually sounds plausible. Or at least to me.

So let's start with MK9. We were told that Sindel killed herself because she wanted to basically save Earthrealm from Shao Kahn by putting a magic ward, preventing him from ever setting foot there. Also, it was said that she did not love him and was forced into a marriage to him. After the fail of two tournaments and losing the opportunity to merge Outworld with Earthrealm, Shao Kahn gets propositioned by Quan Chi who would revive his queen under the guise of "lifting the ward" and allowing him to conquer Earthrealm through force and also promises to make her more "obedient" to him.

So Quan Chi revives her, brainwashes her, Shao Kahn begins his invasion and then we all know what happened next. Sindel murders most of the main characters only to be stopped by Nightwolf and Shao Kahn gets owned by the Elder Gods. All of this works in the favor of Quan Chi and his master Shinnok who are then able to launch an all-out invasion on Earthrealm which also fails.

Now back to MK11. The backstory of Sindel is changed. She has been evil all along, betraying her realm and husband to Shao Kahn, marrying him willingly and never actually killing herself. In fact, Quan Chi is the one who supposedly killed her and then perhaps spread the word that she killed herself in order to escape the clutches of Shao Kahn or whatever.

So naturally, fans are confused about this. They were lead to believe one thing only for this thing to gets changed in such a drastic fashion. But what if I tell you that it is possible for both of Sindel's backstories to actually be true? Here is my theory.

Quan Chi did in fact killed Sindel. What I am theorizing here is that Sindel probably caught up with Quan Chi's schemes and the fact that he works for Shinnok. Quan Chi was acting as Shao Kahn's advisor for a long, long time. But he never worked in his Shao's favor, only in Shinnok's. According to her new bio, Sindel is all about power, influence and wealth. And I am guessing that once she found out that Quan Chi and his master's plans were a direct threat to that, she wasn't too pleased. So she probably was going to rat out Quan Chi to Shao Kahn thus making her a direct threat to Shinnok's plans. So she had to be eliminated.

Here is where the "magic ward" comes into the picture. Think about it, who wants Earthrealm all for himself because he has special plans for that realm? Who wants to destroy Earthrealm more than conquer it? That's right, Shinnok. Shinnok would never allow Shao Kahn to merge Earthrealm with Outworld because he wants Earthrealm for himself, he has a bone to pick with Raiden and his little realm.

So what I am guessing is that Quan Chi killed Sindel, put up the magic ward preventing Shao Kahn from conquering Earthrealm and thus "saving" it for Shinnok, and then blamed the whole thing on Sindel's suicide. Her MK9 bio is what Quan Chi had everyone else believe happened with Sindel.

When he proposed to resurrect her to Shao Kahn and make her more obedient, he did exactly that. I mean, he already knew where she was buried, all he had to do was bring her back. And I feel like the magic he used was similar to that which he used to make the revenants from, if not the same one. Thus polluting Sindel with Shinnok's evil and dark magic, making her even more evil in the process. Evil enough to murder her own daughter and most of her allies without a second thought. He also probably made sure she never remembers the little fact that he killed her in addition to making her follow Shao Kahn's orders.

We know that Sindel took Shao Kahn willingly, but I am guessing, she only cared about his empire and the "goods" that the empire provided her (wealth, influence, power). She even says it in an intro. That she only married because of his strength and power. She is, simply put, an opportunist that saw the right match that would get her what she always wanted: Power and control over people.

So it is entirely possible that Sindel could have married Shao Kahn on her own free will but still be trapped in a loveless marriage to someone she doesn't care about. Which helped Quan Chi to convince Shao Kahn that she killed herself because she wanted to get away from him and in a last act of defiance, screwed up his plans with Earthrealm and was forced to participate in Mortal Kombat tournaments.

Which is where one the biggest flaw with my theory lies, the Mortal Kombat tournaments. If Shinnok wanted Earthrealm for himself then he took a big risk by letting Shao Kahn compete in the tournaments. He was a win away from merging Outworld to Earthrealm which means that the ward would be pointless.

My guess here is that this is why Quan Chi was present in the first tournament in MK9. If Shao Kahn was successful and he won, Quan Chi was to act and either kill him or open up portals in Outworld so Shinnok's invasion can begin but instead starting with Earthrealm, Shinnok would start with Outworld.

Again, these are just my thoughts and I could very well be wrong about absolutely everything. But I think I can see some sense in all of this if my theory turns out to be correct. Or at least some parts of it. It absolutely makes sense to his character if Quan Chi did all of this. He is a master manipulator and almost all of the time a step ahead of everyone, you ask me he is a borderline genius if he did, in fact, pull this all of. And something tells me that he did. For example here is a dialogue between Noob and Sindel:

Noob Saibot: "Your destiny is to serve the Netherrealm." Sindel: "I would never submit to Quan Chi." Noob Saibot: "That is why he murdered you."

Quan Chi probably propositioned her to become an ally to Shinnok and work with him, promising her the ruling of the Netherrealm. But Sindel was smart enough to realize that Shinnok doesn't offer power, he offers slavery and death. So she declined and then Quan Chi killed her. It makes sense if you ask me. Would love to hear your thoughts on this subject.

tl;dr Quan Chi murdered Sindel because she found out about him being a double agent, placed the magic ward over Earthrealm to "save" it from being conquered by force by Shao Kahn, but only because that realm is his master Shinnok's prize and he wants it all for himself. Then he made up the whole story about her killing herself, brought her back and brainwashed her into never remembering their last encounter and made her even more subservient to Shao Kahn. It was all part of Quan Chi and Shinnok's plan and Sindel was just an obstacle at first but then became a tool in their schemes.

PSA for my fellow PVP newbies

    Posted: 19 Nov 2019 10:58 AM PST

Been a big fan of MK 11. Never played much fighting games but I enjoy this one a lot. Always been single player til relatively recently.

I decided to finall try PVP. And I got my ass whooped. Bad. It sucked. And then it happened again. And again. And again. You get the idea.

But I didn't stop playing. I kept working at it and I finally won my first set in KL.

Moral of the story: losing sucks and no one likes it but keep at it. If I can get there, you can too!
