While I get the redundancy, the new movie honestly would have been improved a lot if they just used the same trio from the first film as the main characters.

Making an OC to be the main character is just nonsensical. For MK fans it will just piss them, and for people not familiar, well it's not really needed, the franchise started somewhere and exposited with the characters already in the game, Johnny Cage was kind of used as that guy in MK9.

Comparing the movies and how they handled the lore IMO is kind of hard since it's different circumstances. The 95 movie had problems, sure, but it pretty much had to build the story ground up, and it had the limitations of being made in the 90s where Goro not being seen doing that much and going out the way he did is more excusable, along with a PG-13 rating. So if they didn't need to make an OC then, they definitely don't need to now.

And the thing is, giving the new lore that came out since that first movie, it would have just been more fitting to have Cage be the one with the ancestral shit and also a past glory. Cole literally just stole Liu Kang's chosen one shit, and Sonya had a story that made many believe that it would have just made more sense if she was the main character.

The arcana stuff, like making up a new OC, is just insulting to the audience's intelligence, we have to just simplify things to an absurd degree. We really can't just say that Jax and Sonya got the advanced military tech, the audience won't just buy that? Johnny's powers weren't really explained for a long time, but when it did, it was just two lines in MKX, and even then, having him being a main character could give some extra time to that. Liu Kang is a magic monk taught by Thunder God, surely there's no way for him to get fire powers.

In the original, they pretty much just didn't have powers until Liu Kang pulled some shit in the finale, which just goes to show that people can accept that martial arts can make people do magic shit, nobody questioned Kung Fu Panda after all. And the original didn't have the luxury of having detailed lore for that stuff.

Cole is just a weird studio decision that makes no sense. A person who's really unfamiliar won't know that he's not in the games, so what's the point in refusing to use a point of view character who actually is from the games, what difference does it make?

Of course, the movie has more problems than Arcana and Cole, and it messes up some things like Mileena just existing with no mention of Kitana and everybody already beating everyone before the tournament even starts taking away a lot of tension, but I feel like those two things specifically are really insulting towards audience intelligence.

Like there are pretty much three MK movies, 95, MK9, and Scorpions Revenge, and while all of them have their issues, nobody was asking for a whole made-up character to explain stuff, or complained about the powers being confusing.

If we really don't have to give exposition for everybody then just limit the cast too who would actually make sense to be there in an MK1 story. Save people like Jax for the sequel.

The Scorpion, Sub-Zero conflict can still happen as a more background story, Raiden is the mentor role, Johnny, Liu, and Sonya are the mains, while Shang Tsung, Goro, and Kano are antagonists.

No need to explain why the bad guy has a cyber eye, he lost it. The bad guys are from a magic world with weird creatures, Raiden is a thunder god, Sub-Zero is descended from ancient people with ice powers, demons decided to give Scorpion powers to exact revenge, Johnny descended from ancient warrior people, and Liu has chi, chi has always been used to explain bullshit, he uses chi.
