I love Mortal Kombat. I despise MK11's writing.

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 04:07 AM PDT

Mortal Kombat is timelessly cool. Like Pokemon or Dragonball, it has been a steadfast friend throughout the decades and a comforting port of familiarity that we can all visit at our leisure. It's a lovely little nugget of joy that people can hold close to their hearts in a world that seems to be crumbling at its foundations. I love Mortal Kombat.

Having said that, FUCK MK11's storytelling.

    (Thing long, me no read)

It might not be fair to torpedo an entire games enjoyability based on what ultimately makes up maybe 25% of it, but storytelling is something that makes or breaks an experience for me. For some people it's graphics, for others it's the soundtrack...but for me it's the writing. I had made sure to not purchase MK11 until about a week ago, opting to wait until the full game had actually been released instead of paying to be drip fed sporadic content over a three year time frame. I even stayed away from all the story playthroughs on YouTube.

    Having just finished the main story and Aftermath, I can honestly say that this is some of the most amateur hour shit I've ever seen. Putting aside the hundreds of plot holes, poor characterization, godawful dialogue, mentally handicapped characters, nonsensical confrontations and suprising amounts of filler, heres my main issue;

NR have orchestrated a scenarion in which literally nothing in their story matters anymore. If someone dies, or something gets destroyed, or two characters get married that the fanbase doesn't like, well guess what? That can just be immediately ret-conned at the drop of a spinning razor hat! This is the fundamental problem with using the "SaVe tHe TiMeLiNe" trope to zero the clock on your universe. It makes it so that nothing has consequence ever again...because any problems can just be BOOPED back to the status quo by slapping a big red button on a magic alarm clock. Why should I care about anything that happens when at any given time it's only a quick button press away from not existing, and therefore not mattering?

When they did it for MK9, it made a certain degree of sense. MK9 was the big, triumphant return for the Mortal Kombat franchise. It was the old dog with new tricks busting onto the scene and showing those modern era pansies how Raiden and Sonya get shit done. So in that regard, it kind of made sense to sweep the breadcrumbs off the metaphorical story table and clean everything up a bit to be more pallatable. Bing bang boom, now we had a fresh and zesty new timeline all set up for its brave new adventure, free of the confusing story elements of the previous generation. Great.

MKX leapt from the MK9 springboard really nicely. It took advantage of its limitless freedom to establish structure and heirachy among the characters; something that was sorely needed. A new Khan of Outworld was directly co-operating with Earthrealm, which boradened our understanding of how different realms worked while also giving us cool new environments to explore. Characters we know and love now had children and protogees who we, as an audience, could connect with by experiencing new things alongside. And when Shinnok, a terrifying old threat, surfaced to wreak destruction...one of those fresh faced young warriors rose to meet him in Kombat and vanquish him for the good of the realms. It aint' shakespear, but it was about as perfect in tone as you could ask for with Mortal Kombat.

MK10 wasn't a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it did SO much right given the difficult position it was in. It gave the revenant warriors a new purpose. It took a major stride forward with the klassic beef between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. It effectively established the young SF squad as fighters in their own right. It did a fantastic job at wearing down Raidens patience with everyones shennanigans until he was poised to become a full blown villain. It basically set up the PERFECT sandpit for the next installment to play in. And what does MK11 decide to do with it all?

Lol Raiden not villain no more hit button make him vanish like fart in wind. Lol Shao Khan not dead no more hit button make him magic alive so he do nothing ever. Lol Liu Kang and Kitana not Netherrealm lords no more make into Kronika goons. Lol Sonya dead but then make her not dead because 2 of everyone. Lol Cassie has power than can wreck Shinnok but lets forget that exists. Lol young Hanzo angry so we kill old Hanzo which make young Hanzo not angry which is exact same arc as OLD Hanzo only much faster and dumber because haha time travel. Lol Sindel good but actually evil while good underneath but SURPRISE TWIST was evil whole time we just forgot to mention it hahaha retcons for days magic timeline hourglass fixy button go brrrrr Kronika is a very interesting character and not at all a hackneyed plot device.

It's honestly like the MK11 writing team went out of their way to systematically dismantle everything MKX worked so hard to establish. Was there some kind of massive shift in staff I'm not aware of? I mean for chrissakes it's not like the bar is set particularly high for a story about ice ninjas and interdimensional warlords, but it's not hard to have SOME semblance of narrative cohesion. Why is MK11 so disastrously incompetent in even the easiest fundamentals of plot?

So in conclusion, I'm mad butthurt that I don't get to play as Ermac. 9/10, it has a little something for everyone.

Skillset-wise, isn't Liu Kang pretty much a better Johnny Cage in MK11?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 01:35 PM PDT

Over the past few weeks in MK11, I've been trying like HELL to make Johnny Cage work. He's not easy by any stretch of the imagination, and playing him demands knowledge of how to maintain good footsies. What's worse is- it feels like any opponent with even the faintest level of familiarity with Johnny's moves can turn a previously winnable match for Johnny into a drawn-out poking war of attrition until somebody presses the throw button first.

My online record with Johnny Cage, who I have been giving my ABSOLUTE ALL, is a lame 22 wins to 28 losses.

Meanwhile, my online record with Liu Kang, who I have BARELY practiced with, is 20 wins to 15 losses. Already quite the improvement over my struggling Johnny.

And really, how could that not be the case? Liu Kang has pretty much everything Johnny Cage doesn't: Blisteringly fast normals, at least 3 good krushing blows that aren't particularly difficult to activate, a low Fireball that can be special canceled into from almost any of his strings, a command grab (Kusari Slam) that works on pretty much everyone, AND a damage increase (Dragon fire) that activates way faster than Johnny's own. (Brass knuckles).

So all things considered, for the average player, isn't Liu Kang basically a better version of Johnny Cage? More rewarding for less effort, with a lower amount of mechanical knowledge needed? Make no mistake, I'm not trying to say Liu Kang mains have no skill and Johnny is where it's at, but quite frankly- it seems like Liu is better than Johnny at virtually everything, and I'm seriously considering actually learning Liu Kang.

What are your thoughts on this?

I really don’t see the issue

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 10:00 AM PDT

I still don't see the issue surrounding Kira. Kira had a copied moveset in her first game. But so did Jade, Smoke, Reptile. And no one Ever complained about that. In fact they became fan favorite ninjas in the following years. If the Klassic icon ninjas can get that chance, why cant Kira? It's kinda hypocritical because Kira can be good. People just don't want their favorite character's spot taken away
