Just saw the Mortal Kombat movie. Quick review, no spoilers.

Warning: There might be some spoilers in the comments as people are asking for spoilerish details.

Film is very decent. Some things people might be interested in:

Film is maybe 45%-50% fight scenes which is great since they're the entire point of the film. There's basically a fight scene every ten minutes or so. Plot and dialogue is clearly only there to thinly justify why the next fight scene is taking place.

Fight choreography is great, I can't explain it well but they are closer in style to 80-90s Hong Kong cinema or The Raid:Redemption than standard Hollywood action sequences. Interesting mix of wire work/cheesy moves and more grounded MMA/military fighting styles. There are a couple silly moments, most of them involving Kung Lao's hat but otherwise I loved the fights. No shaky cam nonsense and you can tell that quite often that it's the actual actors themselves doing it. We know that Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, Lewis Tan and Ludi Lin are great martial artists and it shows. I was pleasantly surprised at how good Jessica McNamee (Sonya) is in her fight scenes. If I have any criticism for it its that:

    (1) Fights against CGI characters are a noticeable step down that fights between human characters and

    (2) These actors move fast. Normally shows would slow down the action so that the audience can take it in. This show doesn't do that. Not to say that fights are too short (they're not and some are pretty long), but there are tons of blink and you'll miss it moments.

Most of the stuff in the trailer happens within the first 20 minutes or so.

Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero is definately the highlight of the show for me. A shame his face is covered up most of the time as he has a great "My job is to be an absolute psycho and I love my job" face. If they ever wanted to cast an Asian Joker he'd be my first pick.

Liu Kang has a more prominent role than the trailers might suggest.

I didn't feel that Cole being there detracted from the classic characters. He gets a couple big moments but the majority of them still belong to the original cast.

Characters do say some of the classic lines. Most of them are pure cheese when they come up. YMMV on whether they work. Personally I wasn't too keen on them but again I'm just here for the fights.

There are about five shots that are gratuitously bloody. Otherwise it's bloody but not ridiculously so.

A remix of the Mortal Kombat theme does play.

There are two scenes where the lighting choices are awful (like you have two characters interacting and the time of day is clearly different for them). Thankfully they're short and they don't happen during fight scenes.

The entire movie feels like it's setting up a lot more movies down the line.

There's that. let me know if anyone has any questions.
