    ...that either Liu Kang's or Shang Tsung's timeline has to be the only "real" one.

    Well, why not both?

    With all the time travel, rewinding, restarting, and Kronika-killing, perhaps time has been warped even beyond the power of the hourglass and two futures have been split off. So Fire God Liu Kang is happily overseeing an Earthrealm that has never lost a Mortal Kombat tournament thanks to the Great Kung Lao, where Johnny, Sonya, Jax, and all Liu Kang's other friends and allies are blissfully unaware that Earthrealm has ever been in danger; meanwhile, Shang Tsung is reveling as the overlord of all the realms, extending his reach into Orderrealm and Chaosrealm and pronouncing to all the Law of Shang Tsung. But suddenly, an emissary from the beyond appears to them both and announces to their surprise and disbelief that not only are they not the only timelines in existence, but the maintenance of the fabric of the universe demands that only one of their timelines be permitted to continue. And to determine which timeline survives, the two of them must gather their strongest champions for a tournament of...MORTAL KOMBAT!

    It seems to me like this approach has some advantages from a story and a roster perspective. First of all, it creates a natural conflict with plenty of excuses for fights, whereas neither Liu Kang's nor Shang Tsung's ending alone implied that there was any real conflict to be had. Second, it allows both Liu Kang and Shang Tsung themselves to come back to the roster when it seems like, if you went with only one of the alternate timelines in MK11 Aftermath, you'd have to discard whichever one didn't survive the final fight. Having both of them also has the advantage of reiterating the conflict between Liu Kang's selfless virtue and Shang Tsung's egoistic cunning that goes back to the very first game, but now in an entirely different register, with both of them having shaped their own universes according to their principles and those universes now going head to head. Finally, it lets you take advantage of both of the kinds of new and returning rosters that got teased in each of the endings (a playable Great Kung Lao for Liu Kang, returning Chaosrealm and Orderrealm fighters for Shang Tsung) without, I think, seeming overly forced or artificial.

    Do you think it's possible that NRS has a plan like this for the story going forward? Do you think it's more likely they'll just stick with one Aftermath ending and leave the other as a pure hypothetical? Where's the story going to go from here?
